Negative Calorie Foods

Negative calorie foods are foods that require more calories to eat and digest - then what the food actually has in it to begin with.

Everyone reacts differently to different foods and all of our metabolisms run on a different pace.  If you want to lose weight or feel like you have reached a plateau, try incorporating some of the negative calorie foods listed below into your diet - especially when you feel hungry.  They will help you feel fuller longer and provide beneficial nutrients.  Look for organic produce where possible and use a fruit/vegetable wash for cleaning your produce.
  • mango
  • lime
  • lemon
  • honey dew melon
  • grapefruit
  • cranberry
  • cantaloupe
  • blueberry
  • apple
  • watermelon

Proper Food Combining

Food combining is a method of eating that allows your system to digest foods quickly and easily and is an important element in any weight loss program.

When improper foods are combined, a person's digestive system can become over-loaded and unable to function properly.  The food rots in the digestive tract for an excessive amount of time making the person feel tired, bloated and uncomfortable.  Nutrients cannot be utilized properly and a lot of undigested food becomes stored as fat. This is probably why products like Alka Seltzer, Milk of Magnesia and Pepto Bismol are part of a billion dollar a year industry in the U.S.

Food combining is based on your body's natural enzymes required to break down the food you put into it.  For example, when we eat a protein with a starch (such as a steak and baked potato), the body needs to produce an acidic environment to breakdown the protein and an alkaline environment to break down the starch.  When these two types of digestive juices are combined, they neutralize one another and can cause decaying food to be held up in the stomach causing a lengthy fermenting process resulting in gas, stomach upset and bloating.  It can become overtaxing on the system and can lead to less than an ideal digestive function.  Does that mean you can't eat a steak or potato?  No - it just means that you probably want to eat them with foods that use the same type of digestive enzymes in order to boost your metabolism and digest the foods more quickly.

Here are some food combining tips:

1)  Eat fruit alone at least 1-2 hours before eating any other kind of food.  (That means first thing in the morning followed by your breakfast an hour or so later or as a mid-day snack).
2)  Eat proteins alone or with vegetables
3)  Eat starches alone or with vegetables
4)  Do not drink with your meal - (this can dilute the digestive juices.  Try to wait 30 minutes after your meal before consuming liquids)

Everyone is different so experiment for a a few days to see if you notice a difference in your energy level and overall digestive health.  This may be a helpful guideline that works well with your body.
Weight Loss Supplements

There are certain supplements that can be part of a healthy weight loss regimen and may help with hunger and willpower.  As always, check with your doctor before adding any of these to your diet.

1)  Chromium Picolinate is believed to help build muscle, slow down aging and control blood sugar by assisting insulin to do its work more effectively and efficiently.  An added bonus is that Chromium tends to decrease cravings for sweets.
2)  Gingko Biloba not only assists the brain by increasing blood and oxygen, but also increases the ability of brain cells to make use of glucose.  It is also good for energy and circulation.
3)  Fiber is another essential part of life and dieting.  Fiber helps keep the colon clean and functioning properly.  If taken before meals, it helps suppress the appetite and gives a feeling of fullness.
4)  Omega 3-fatty acids improve insulin efficiency in using carbohydrates and fats for fuel. Additionally, omega-3's may help people who constantly crave fatty foods because it will satisfy the body's hunger for the right kind of fat.
5)  Coenzyme Q10 is a nutrient that exists everywhere in the body assisting with enzyme functions on a cellular level.  It encourages energy production helping enzymes release energy in every cell which in turn reduces fat storage.  Studies have found that some overweight people have low levels of CoQ10, and by supplementing it they can help control their body weight.  (I take 50 mg. a day).
6)  Siberian Ginseng aids in moving fluids and nutrients throughout the body.  This should not be used by people with high blood pressure, heart disorders or hyperglycemia.
7)  Vitamin C with bioflavonoids is necessary for normal glandular function.  It speeds up a sluggish metabolism, prompting to burn more calories.  (I take 1000 mg a day).
8)   Lecithin is a fat emulsifier that breaks down fat so it can be removed from the body.
9)   Calcium is involved in the activation of lipase, an enzyme that breaks down fats.
10)  B Vitamin Complex helps burn calories and lessons the cravings for sugar.
11)  Garcon Cambodia suppresses appetite and prevents the body from turning carbohydrate calories into fat by inhibiting the action of an enzyme called NATO-citrate lyase.
12)  L-Carnitine helps the body break down fat deposits.

Well, it's been almost one year since I started my Nutritional Consulting Course through the Global College of Natural Medicine.  I'm happy to say that I graduated this week.  The 500 hour course included the study of anatomy, physiology, medical terminolgy, dietary guidelines, herbal remedies, supplements, pediatric nutrition, alternative healing methods, common ailments, physical fitness, orthomolecular nutrition, legal guidelines for unlicensed practioners, and toxicity and detoxification.  I feel like that is just the start of a new passion and look forward to becoming a lifelong student of nutritional education.  Thank you to my friends and family for their support and encouragement!
